Music

Music

Music at Bradford Forster Academy

Through teaching with excellence and modelling exemplary behaviour, the Music department strives to challenge, motivate and inspire greatness in our students enabling them to become outstanding and ambitious for themselves. We passionately believe that music offers pupils unique, vibrant, exciting opportunities for self-expression and the development self-confidence, resilience, teamwork and self-discipline. Pupils are taught skills and knowledge which enable them to perform and compose music. They are taught how to listen music critically, with enjoyment and with an understanding of its cultural, historical and social context and significance. We provide pupils with the opportunity to explore music across a wide range of exciting and engaging instruments and platforms.

In partnership with our strong Christian foundations and high-quality teaching and learning practice, Drama at Bradford Forster Academy encourages students to become:

  • Ambitious for themselves.
  • Academically successful.
  • Inquisitive and reflective learners.
  • Active and effective participants.
  • Confident communicators.
  • Emotionally resilient.
  • Inspiring to others.
  • Culturally and socially aware.

Our Curriculum is sequenced to allow students to build their knowledge and skills over time by:

  •  Providing a high-quality music education which delivers theoretical and practical learning opportunities and experiences for all students, including those with SEND and specific talents
  • Developing levels of literacy and oracy by teaching pupils a wide range of subject-specific technical vocabulary and providing pupils with opportunities to employ in contexts.
  • Providing opportunities for the use of IT and music software to compose, research, record and refine creative ideas.
  • Equipping students with the skills they need to function safely and responsibly in a practical environment and instilling a positive sense of self-belief, creative freedom, and purpose.
  • Providing a curriculum which develops an understanding of the three main areas of music: performance, composition, and history which challenge, engage, enrich, and motivate students.
  • Equipping pupils with the theoretical knowledge and skills to be able to successfully access GCSE music at KS4.

Technology subjects provide students with opportunities for them to develop the habits and skills needed to succeed in life during and after BFA by:

  •  Promoting the development of good student mental health and well-being by developing good listening skills, learning to take turns, and give and take constructive criticism. Students are encouraged to see setbacks and mistakes as opportunities to learn and grow.
  • Ensuring equality of opportunity and develop an appreciation and respect for diversity in all its forms through listening to a wide variety of music from all over the world. Students are encouraged to recognise and celebrate that which we have in common alongside that which makes us different
  • Developing cultural capital by; giving students opportunities to learn a variety of instruments including classical instruments; exposing students to contemporary, classical and art music; giving opportunities for students to perform in ensembles and watch concerts.
  • Supporting spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development by celebrating cultural differences and developing an understanding of the background of genres such as the blues and rap. Pupils will be taught how certain music links movements such as Black Lives Matter, Pride and Women’s Rights.
  • Providing enrichment opportunities through expert tuition from professional musicians, providing opportunities to work with external agencies within music technology, providing opportunities to rehearse and perform in an ensemble, providing opportunities to practice and refine, providing opportunities to listen to live music.
  • Providing students with musical activities which could enrich their wider lives including listening to music to alter mood, to dance and have fun with, to sing, and to have the skills needed to join a musical ensemble.

In achieving this, we endeavour to support our students in breaking through limited horizons and becoming confident, effective, and employable citizens within the context of the local community of BD4, Bradford and beyond.
