ACADEMY UPDATE – The school will be open as normal on Monday 13th March.

Science

Science

Science at Bradford Forster Academy

Through teaching with excellence and modelling exemplary behaviour, the Science department strives to challenge, motivate and inspire greatness in our students enabling them to become outstanding and ambitious for themselves. By covering both practical and theoretical elements Science touches almost every aspect of a student’s life. It allows students at BFA to encounter a range of phenomena from the atomic to the cosmic scale, allowing all to find something that inspires their interest and enjoyment.

Our intent is that students in our subject acquire a broad range of knowledge and skills covering the three core areas of science and develop an understanding of how these relate to; the way the natural processes occur, how technology is developed and how future problems for humanity can be averted.

Students learn how to identify a problem for investigation, build a plan to test solutions for the problem and then evaluate the outcome to determine the best solution. We aim for our students to use these ideas to make essential contributions to future societal, technological and scientific developments.

In partnership with our strong Christian foundations and high-quality teaching and learning practice, Science at Bradford Forster Academy encourages students to become:
  • Ambitious for themselves.
  • Academically successful.
  • Inquisitive and reflective learners.
  • Active and effective participants.
  •  Confident communicators.
  • Emotionally resilient.
  • Inspiring to others.
  • Culturally and socially aware.

Science is sequenced to allow students to build their knowledge and skills over time by:

  • Providing a high-quality, all-round education, delivering valuable learning opportunities and experiences for all students, including those with SEND and specific talents
  • KS3 students follow a skills-based curriculum designed address the skills students will require at KS4, this helps to develop the numeracy and literacy skills of students.
  • KS3 curriculum contains opportunities for students to extend their learning through hinterlands topics in each SOL.
  • All KS4 learners have access to the GCSE Science course at Foundation and Higher level. We also offer the AQA entry level certificate qualification. The curriculum is differentiated for students of different abilities, ensuring that all students make excellent progress from their own starting points and encapsulating the BFA vision; ‘Everything is possible for one who believes’ (Mark 9:23).
  • Developing working memory and revision practices using regular retrieval practice.
  •  Developing levels of literacy with keywords, oracy through questioning and guided/popcorn reading.
  • Providing glossaries, opportunities for reading, discussion, debate and encouraging writing with confidence.
  • Developing levels of numeracy through practical applications, use of equations/calculations, plotting graphs and analysis of provided data in all Science subjects.
  • Recognising the importance of digital literacy by affording them the opportunity to access digital hardware and software for homework tasks and in lesson.
  • Homework is set so that students have a week to manage their workload and  catch up club runs after school to support any students who have forgotten or were unable do their homework at home.

Science provides students with opportunities for them to develop the habits and skills needed to succeed in life during and after BFA by:

  • Providing exercise books, revision guides, workbooks and equipment ensuring every student is treated equally.
  • Igniting a sense of awe and wonder in students at the processes behind how life, the universe and everything functions.
  • Delivering a breadth of curriculum across key stages 3 and 4, that enhances cultural capital by immersing students into a wide range of environmental contexts around the globe at a variety of scales.
  • Giving students insight in to how the world works from how electricity is generated to how we ensure that humans don’t run out of food. Developing cultural capital through a introduction previously unencountered phenomena and exploration of the world around them.
  • Developing cultural capital by providing trips and experiences such as trips to the zoo, university science fair and the big bang national Science fair.
  • Developing cultural capital by extending pupils knowledge of the work a range of scientists, engineers and other Science based work has had on society.
  • Exploring moral and social issues such as those associated with the environmental impact of technologies and the ethical concerns over stem cell research.
  • Promoting the development of good student physical health by teaching the principles of nutrition, healthy eating and disease prevention.
  • Offering an extra-curricular programme that supports our curriculum and allows students to explore areas and topics outside of the curriculum related to Science.

In achieving this, we endeavour to support our students in breaking through limited horizons and becoming confident, effective, and employable citizens within the context of the local community of BD4, Bradford and beyond.
