History

History

History at Bradford Forster Academy

“Those that do not learn from history are condemned to repeat it” – George Santanya

Through teaching with excellence and modelling exemplary behaviour, the History department strives to challenge, motivate and inspire greatness in our students enabling them to become outstanding and ambitious for themselves. History allows our students to study the successes and failures of the past, enabling the to learn from our mistakes and avoid repeating them in the future. Studying History provides us with insight into our cultures of origin as well as cultures with which we might be less familiar, thereby increasing cross-cultural awareness and building a more inclusive society.

History enables students to make tangible and effective connections across subjects. It encourages an appreciation of how the world works and of the interconnections between scale, community, cultural diversity, interdependence, and sustainability, all the while augmenting cultural capital.

The curriculum is designed to give students an overview of the global society in which they live and how this has evolved over time. Ultimately, History at Bradford Forster Academy encourages students to tell ‘fake news’ from that which is real, enabling them to make their own mind up about the world.

We want to promote an awareness of the usefulness of History to everyday living and in exploring and answering the big questions. In so doing, we aspire to enthuse and empower our students; igniting within them a sense of awe and wonder and enabling them to continue their journey in life as well-rounded and well-informed global citizens with the knowledge that ‘everything is possible for one who believes’ (Mark 9:23)

In partnership with our strong Christian foundations and high-quality teaching and learning practice, Geography at Bradford Forster Academy encourages students to become:

  • Ambitious for themselves.
  • Academically successful.
  • Inquisitive and reflective learners.
  • Active and effective participants.
  • Confident communicators.
  • Emotionally resilient.
  • Inspiring to others.
  • Culturally and socially aware.

History is sequenced to allow students to build their knowledge and skills over time by:

  •  Providing a high-quality, all-encompassing education delivering valuable learning opportunities and experiences that is matched to meet the needs for all students, including those with SEND and specific talents
  • Providing key words, opportunities for reading, discussion and debate, encouraging writing with confidence and developing numeracy through use of graphs and statistics.
  • Recognising the importance of digital literacy by affording them the opportunity to access virtual learning platforms (Eg Sam Learning)
  • Equipping students with the skills they need to function safely and responsibly in an increasingly technological world
  • Gathering at a variety of scales, with varying foci, a broad range of evidence to inform and assess, revealing misconceptions and gaps and responding to these in subsequent planning and delivery, to ensure knowledge and skills are embedded and mastered, prior to exposing students to new content and skills

History provides students with opportunities for them to develop the habits and skills needed to succeed in life during and after BFA by:

  • Igniting a sense of awe and wonder at the history of our nation and the wider world, advancing global perspectives and international understanding. Exploring the interactions between the past and present in order to encourage feelings of hope for the future and thereby enhance physical and mental health and well-being
  • Promoting an appreciation of, and respect for, different cultures and viewpoints, arming our students with the knowledge and skills to celebrate and understand the achievements of man through time and understand the world we live in today
  • Delivering a breadth of curriculum across key stages 3 and 4, that enhances cultural capital by immersing students into a wide range of social, economic and political and contexts at various points in the history of Britain and the wider world
  • Recognising the wonder and beauty of spiritual, moral, social and cultural diversity not just at a global level but closer to home, within our community and school, encouraging and supporting the development of them through the study of our shared past
  • Seeking and delivering opportunities to visit historical sites and museums of import, on both a local, national and international level
  • Comparing and contrasting our own lives with those of others across a wide range of historical periods, from local to national to global, identifying the inter-relationships and connections that exist

In achieving this, we endeavour to support our students in breaking through limited horizons and becoming confident, effective, and employable citizens within the context of the local community of BD4, Bradford and beyond.
