MFL is sequenced to allow students to build their knowledge and skills over time by: - Providing a high-quality, all-encompassing education delivering valuable learning opportunities and experiences that is matched to meet the needs for all students, including those with SEND and specific talents
- Providing parallel texts, glossaries and scaffolded resources that allow all students to access challenging communicative language
- Drawing from the specific expertise of those whose first language is not English by making comparisons and links with home languages at every opportunity
- Developing levels of literacy oracy and numeracy through carefully planned lesson sequencing, grammar instruction and development of reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills
- Recognising the importance of digital literacy by affording students the opportunity to access digital hardware and software for homework tasks and in lessons
| MFL provides students with opportunities for them to develop the habits and skills needed to succeed in life during and after BFA by: - Developing communication skills in a second or third language and subsequently increasing knowledge of English language
- Igniting a sense of belonging to a wider world through the study of other cultures and languages, opening a window onto a world outside of current experience and comparing/contrasting with students’ own experiences
- Promoting a respect of otherness through the study of new language, traditions and cultural events in different areas of the world
- Ensuring a breadth of diversity through examples used in resources, vocabulary that is reflective of student experience and exploration of target language countries both in and beyond Europe
- Delivering a breadth of curriculum across key stages 3 and 4, that enhances cultural capital through exposure to global cultures and languages
- Further enhancing cultural capital by providing opportunities for students to travel abroad through organised trips to France and Spain in KS3
- Developing independence, co-operation and respect through trips abroad
- Supporting spiritual, moral, social and cultural development through the teaching of religious festivals, ethical issues such as the environment and poverty in KS4 and through the skills developed by travelling away from family in a new country
- Recognising the careers opportunities afforded by the possession of a second or third language and working with the careers team to provide placements in multilingual organisations where appropriate
- Organising motivational speakers to raise aspirations not only around languages but making the best of all opportunities that arise.
