Physical Education

Physical Education

Physical Education at Bradford Forster Academy

Through teaching with excellence and modelling exemplary behaviour, the PE department strives to challenge, motivate and inspire greatness in our students enabling them to become outstanding and ambitious for themselves. We develop physical competencies allowing students to excel in a broad range of physical activities. We build on key skills taught in key stages 1 and 2, with students becoming more competent, confident and expert in their knowledge, understanding and techniques. Students develop their confidence, interest and understanding to engage in competitive sports and lead healthy, active lives in and out of school and in later life. Through PE and school sport we provide character development and mental well-being. Our core principles, which are evident thorough our teachings are to engage, develop and be active.

Learners are encouraged to take on various roles such as leader, coach and official thus further developing a strength of character and resilience that will help them to overcome the challenges they are likely to encounter in adult life.

In partnership with our strong Christian foundations and high-quality teaching and learning practice, Physical Education at Bradford Forster Academy encourages students to become:

  • Ambitious for themselves.
  • Academically successful.
  • Inquisitive and reflective learners.
  • Active and effective participants.
  • Confident communicators.
  • Emotionally resilient.
  • Inspiring to others.
  • Culturally and socially aware.

Physical Education is sequenced to allow students to build their knowledge and skills over time by:

  • Building on key skills enabling students to become more competent confident and expert in their knowledge understanding and techniques.
  • Promoting key concepts and overriding themes, such as outwitting an opponent and problem solving, into every sport / activity.
  • Assessing students at the start of the year in KS3 and grouping into band A or B (when there are 4 groups on). A and B band follow similar activities through the year. There are some expectations to this designed to maximise the progress of each group and encourage more participation in physical activity.
  • Assessing students at the end of each sport based on 4 different areas (mental, physical, technical and tactical).
  • Providing opportunities for students to reflect on their performances and consider how to improve.

Physical Education provides students with opportunities for them to develop the habits and skills needed to succeed in life during and after BFA by:

  • Offering an extra-curricular programme that supports our curriculum to try and develop students into technical, skilful and tactically aware performers.
  • Developing cultural capital by providing trips and experiences such as an outdoor and adventurous activities trip.
  • Providing school-club links with Bradford Bulls and Unity Boxing to vide external expertise to enhance the quality of education on offer.
  • Allowing students to work as a team through sport and take on leadership roles within sport to develop key skills such as effective communication
  • Embedding a respect for the rules through sport to support moral and social development
  • Promoting physical active lifestyles.

In achieving this, we endeavour to support our students in breaking through limited horizons and becoming confident, effective, and employable citizens within the context of the local community of BD4, Bradford and beyond.
