Travel and Tourism

Travel and Tourism

Travel and Tourism at Bradford Forster Academy

“Tourism is the biggest industry in the world” Martin Parr

Through teaching with excellence and modelling exemplary behaviour, we aim to foster and ignite an interest in the Travel and Tourism industry and to challenge students to become more resourceful and resilient. We aim to broaden students’ perspectives to provide a global dimension to their studies.

Our vision for our students is to be able to explore the different reasons why people travel and become well rounded young people who demonstrate good communication and interpersonal skills. Students will show self-management, teamwork, problem solving and literacy skills leading to excellent outcomes which will enable them to access the wide range of employment opportunities predicted to emerge within the industry in the next 25 years.

In so doing, we aspire to help them grow and have the confidence and resilience to continue their journey in life as well-rounded and well-informed global citizens with the knowledge that ‘everything is possible for one who believes’ (Mark 9:23)

In partnership with our strong Christian foundations and high-quality teaching and learning practice, Travel and Tourism at Bradford Forster Academy encourages students to become:

  • Ambitious for themselves.
  • Academically successful.
  • Inquisitive and reflective learners.
  • Active and effective participants.
  • Confident communicators.
  • Emotionally resilient.
  • Inspiring to others.
  • Culturally and socially aware.

Travel and Tourism is sequenced to allow students to build their knowledge and skills over time by:

  • Providing a high-quality, all-encompassing education delivering valuable learning opportunities and experiences that is matched to meet the needs of all students, including those with SEND and specific talents.
  • Providing glossaries, opportunities for reading, discussion and debate, encouraging writing with confidence and developing numeracy skills.
  • Recognising the importance of digital literacy by affording them the opportunity to access digital hardware and software for homework tasks and in lessons for their coursework.
  • Equipping students with the skills they need to function safely and responsibly in an increasingly technological world where it is possible to research and book holidays in a matter of seconds.
  • Gathering at a variety of scales, with varying foci, a broad range of evidence to inform and assess, revealing misconceptions and gaps and responding to these in subsequent planning and delivery, to ensure knowledge and skills and embedded and mastered, prior to exposing students to new content and skills.

Travel and Tourism provides students with opportunities for them to develop the habits and skills needed to succeed in life during and after BFA by:

  • Igniting a sense of awe and wonder at the beauty of the world, advancing global perspectives and international understanding and exploring the interactions between people and places to foster feelings of hope and happiness and thereby enhance physical and mental health and well-being.
  • Promoting an appreciation of, and respect for, different cultures and viewpoints by recognising right and wrong; understanding choices and consequences; investigating moral and ethical issues; offering a reasoned viewpoint.
  • Developing cultural capital across a wide range of contexts through exploring beliefs and experiences; accepting, respecting and celebrating all faiths and values; discovering and learning about the world and your place within it; using imagination and creativity; reflecting on your actions. Then linking this to the travel and tourism sector.
  • Recognising the wonder of spiritual, moral, social and cultural diversity at a variety of travel and tourism destinations around the world.
  • Seeking to provide enrichment opportunities and opportunities to work with outside organisations involved in the travel and tourism industry.
  • Providing students with an insight into how the travel and tourism sector impacts our community, our city, the economy of the UK and the wider world. In addition to exploring the roles and interrelationships between industries and key organisations within the sector.

In achieving this, we endeavour to support our students in breaking through limited horizons and becoming confident, effective, and employable citizens within the context of the local community of BD4, Bradford and beyond.
