Art and Photography

Art and Photography

Art and Photography at Bradford Forster Academy

“All art should inspire and evoke emotion. Art should be something you can actually feel.” Chris De Rubeis

Through teaching with excellence and modelling exemplary behaviour, the Art and Photography department strives to engage, motivate, challenge and inspire all our students, enabling them to be proud of themselves and the work they produce. Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. A high-quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation. The national curriculum for art and design aims to ensure that all pupils:  produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques; evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design; know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms’.

By equipping students with knowledge, skills and techniques of different artists and art styles, Art and photography enables students to develop their own style and opinions, it enables them to react and respond to different stimulus around them and pushes them to be active and creative members of their local community.  In so doing, we aspire to help them grow and have the confidence and resilience to continue their journey in life as well-rounded, well-informed creative, compassionate citizens with the knowledge that ‘everything is possible for one who believes’ (Mark 9:23)

In partnership with our strong Christian foundations and high-quality teaching and learning practice, Art and Photography at Bradford Forster Academy encourages students to become:

  • Ambitious for themselves.
  • Academically successful.
  • Inquisitive and reflective learners.
  • Active and effective participants.
  • Confident communicators.
  • Emotionally resilient.
  • Inspiring to others.
  • Culturally and socially aware.

Art and photography are sequenced to allow students to build their knowledge and skills over time by:

  • Providing a high-quality, all-encompassing education delivering valuable learning opportunities and experiences that is matched to meet the needs for all students, including those with SEND, specific talents and emotion and/or environmental barriers.
  • Providing a new and ranged vocabulary, glossaries, opportunities for reading, discussion and debate, encouraging writing with confidence, developing formal and informal aspect of Literacy and the ability to share and develop opinions. Developing numeracy through ratios and proportions and improving, measuring and accuracy with perspective
  • Recognising the importance of digital literacy by affording them the opportunity to access digital hardware and software for homework tasks and in lesson. Development and mastery of a range of programs to produce research based and digital art-based work. Introducing learners to new technology and new ways of displaying and presenting ideas.
  • Equipping students with the skills they need to function safely and responsibly in an increasingly technological world
  • Gathering at a variety of scales, with varying foci, a broad range of evidence to inform and assess, revealing misconceptions and gaps and responding to these in subsequent planning and delivery, to ensure knowledge and skills are embedded and mastered, prior to exposing students to new content and skills
  • Fostering the ability to critique oneself and other honestly and openly to strive to improve.

Art and photography provides students with opportunities for them to develop the habits and skills needed to succeed in life during and after BFA by:

  • Igniting a sense of awe and wonder at the beauty all around, developing a questioning mentality and push learners to look for questions and answer that are not easily visible. Making sure that learner know that mistake are just steps along a greater journey and if we learn from them and push forwards, we will succeed thus enhancing our physical and mental health well-being
  • Promoting an appreciation of, and respect for, different cultures and viewpoints, arming our students with the knowledge and skills to celebrate and see the beauty of the planet we share, whilst remaining able to question, debate, offer opinion and value the world around them
  • Delivering a breadth of curriculum across key stages 3 and 4, that enhances cultural capital by immersing students into a wide range of historical, cultural, moral and divers contexts, allowing them to develop 2d and 3d art skills and foster a desire to create and show their individuality.
  • Recognising the wonder and beauty of spiritual, moral, social, and cultural diversity not just at a global level but closer to home, within our community and school, encouraging and supporting the development of them
  • Seeking and delivering opportunities to venture beyond the school and BD4 into the city, wider county and further afield, enabling students to engage their senses and absorb new experiences both physical and human, to further enhance the quality of education on offer
  • Exploring, comparing, and contrasting our own lives with those of others in different local around the world and different times periods through history

In achieving this, we endeavour to support our students in breaking through limited horizons and becoming confident, effective, and employable citizens within the context of the local community of BD4, Bradford and beyond.
